PNMF recognizes that a country like Nepal needs technologies that are more suitable for its environment, geography, and culture. As such, working with the local, national, international partners, PNMF and its centers and college hope to start an initiative which promotes multidisciplinary research to develop products and processes which, for example, maximizes energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact at the same time. We also welcome other pro-poor innovations and technologies that can make a difference in the lives of the people, especially those who are underserved and under-privileged.
That is, the vision of the Sustainable Technologies and Innovation Lab (STIL) is to design, test and disseminate technologies that are practical, affordable and sustainable. We value interdisciplinary research, collaborations, and knowledge sharing. Some examples of technologies include, but are not limited to:
- Earthquake resistant sustainable housing
- Soil and water testing and medicinal plant extraction
- Improved cooking stoves
- Renewable energy (solar, bio-gas)
- Pollutant removal from river water
- Water and air pollution tracking and health hazard evaluation
- Arsenic removal from groundwater
Within the academic setting of the polytechnic institute, this lab will serve as a good platform to train students. This vision will be achieved through active partnerships and consultations with government and non-government agencies, private organizations, and national and international scholars, professionals, and institutions.
